This spotlight is on Ullswater, England’s “most beautiful lake”. The lake and surrounding area has much to offer holiday makers, and makes the ideal base for exploring the Lake District.

Ullswater is the Ullswater is the second largest lake in the lake district, being nearly 9 miles long and ¾ mile wide at it’s widest point.

It boasts some of the top UK hotels and three rosette restaurants, country house hotels and cosy farmhouses offering homely fare with bed and breakfast, plus a wide selection of self-catering holiday cottages and discreet camping and caravan sites, and wonderful wedding venues.

It is a popular venue for sailing, and there are many boat hire businesses, including the Glenridding Sailing Centre. For those looking to explore the lake in a more relaxed manner, then the famous Ullswater Steamers sail from Glenridding to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. It is also a great place for fishing. Places to stay around Ullswater

At the southern end of Ullswater lie the small villages of Patterdale and Glenridding. They provide an excellent range of self-catering and B&B accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a range of shops, restaurants and pubs. At the northern end of the lake lies the popular villages of Pooley Bridge, which has an impressive area of pubs and shops and is a popular destination for day-trippers at weekends throughout the year. Walking around Ullswater

As well as sailing, boating and cruising on the lake itself, Ullswater is surrounded by some of the best hill-walking the lake district has to offer. The second-highest mountain in England, Helvellyn, is most often climbed from either Glenridding or Patterdale. When you’ve reached the top you might as well continue round to do the Other peaks in the Helvellyn range,m including St Sunday Crag, Dollywaggon Pike and Fairfield. In addition to the east of Ullswater is the majestic Place Fell, and the old Roman road of High Street.
