It is located at the foot the Pennine hills, with the Lake District Fells just a few miles away. As such it makes the ideal base for many dozens of walks over the surrounding fell countryside. The town itself also has much on offer. It was once the county town of Westmoreland, and retains many interesting and beautiful historical buildings.
